hi guys i (my mum)n wants to get some chooks from gumtree
"7 Australorp chicks for $50 or $7.50ea. Colours range from pale grey/splash to black. They are from large healthy stock and are UNSEXED."
how do i tell what the sex is or is it a case of wait and see

Hi Does the ad say how old the chicks. Generally I can tell fairly accurately at about 6-8 weeks although there will be the one that will always prove me wrong I can tell by the wattle developement and sometimes the wings. I wish I had some pictures to post up

I was under the understanding that Australorps in colours other than black were pretty rare in Australia. This seems a very cheap price for rare birds. I would be be confirming that these are indeed Australorps.

Blue and Splash are not rare in Australia, I have heaps of them running around, they are quite common in some areas. As cheekychick said, look for wattle and comb development in the males and also feather development, females will feather up quicker than the males, females will get a tail first and males will remain rather downey on their shoulders up until 4-5 weeks and also lack much of a tail compared to females. By then they are pretty easy to tell apart by comb and wattle development. Good luck!
