Hi, I have some beautiful black hens & a rooster, I am considering showing this wonderful breed instead of my dogs!

Hi, I am a 'newbie' to Australorps- I bought 3, 8 week old chicks today and hoping they will grow up to be lovely hens. I have only ever had Isa Browns but I am disappointed with commercial type hybrid hens as they only seem to lay well for a short time. Although I primarily have my chickens for their eggs, they are also my pets as well and I name them all! Is this strange behaviour for 'diehard'chook fanciers? I know nothing about 'showing' or breeding but I just really get a buzz out of keeping chooks! ;D
